Tips from AAA Travel Experts

Our Hawaii experts share some tips on how to make the most of your Hawaiian vacation. Their expertise comes from going there and experiencing all the islands have to offer.

  1. Get out of your hotel. Hawaii doesn't have all-inclusive programs because there are so many local restaurants with great food and atmosphere. Go explore the local fare.

  2. Don't over plan. It's okay to plan for events and activities that are in high demand, but the best thing about Hawaii is the warm, relaxing, atmosphere. Allow yourself to enjoy that.

  3. Try something new! Whether it's a new activity or new cuisine, be open-minded!

  4. Don't forget to keep reapplying your sunscreen. The sun is very different than in New York State, and nothing will ruin your vacation quite like a bad sunburn.

  5. Talk to the locals. They are full of information and ready to share it. People in Hawaii are very proud of their islands and want to make sure you make the best use of your time with them. Ask them for recommendations for restaurants or sightseeing options.

  6. If you can, stop on the west coast for 1 night prior to your arrival in Hawaii so you can adjust to the time change.

  7. On your first night there, go to bed when you normally do because you will wake up very early. Take advantage of your body trying to adjust and visit Pearl Harbor early that morning.

  8. Make your vacation as long as you possible can. It's a long flight to get there and you may not return for a few years. If possible, plan for 10 days or more, and visit at least two or three of the islands.

  9. Splurge and rent a convertible while touring the Hawaiian islands. It's a great way to travel!

  10. Explore the beautiful parks. There are many gorgeous waterfalls to be seen.

  11. Shop the ABC stores for less expensive souvenirs.

  12. If you are cruising to Hawaii, you should get a balcony cabin and extend your time in Honolulu. The nice thing about the Hawaii cruise is that you can visit four islands without packing and unpacking, and you don't have to waste time dealing with inter-island flights.

  13. Let the AAA travel consultants help plan your trip. There is no better planning tool than speaking with someone who has experienced the islands and knows them well.
