Discover a Whole New World Of Disney Fun
By Laura Wahler
Every day, Walt Disney World guests flock to the spinning teacups, the Haunted Mansion and the fast rides affectionately referred to as the “Mountains”—Splash, Big Thunder and Space. Sometimes though, it only takes a few turns on “It’s A Small World” before you begin to look for an escape from the Magic Kingdom’s overwhelming cuteness. Check out these “hidden treasures” during your next Disney vacation.
Harmony Barber Shop a Cut Above the Rest
It’s tucked in a quiet corner and easy to miss, but memories are made every day in this old-fashioned barbershop near the Emporium in the Magic Kingdom. First haircuts are their specialty, and no “kid” is too old, no baby too young. Truth be told, at 8 months old, my son Cole didn’t really need a haircut.
After a quick trim, we left the barbershop with a lock of his hair, a complimentary “First Haircut” mouse ears hat and certificate, and a camera full of pictures for the baby book. Haircuts at the Harmony Barber Shop are done on a walk-in basis only and cost $14 for children, $17 for adults.
Take a Spin on a Segway Human Transporter
The Segway, in all its geeky glory, is the world's first self-balancing human transporter—and Epcot guests are welcome to participate in special Segway tours each morning.
Around the World at Epcot allows guests to operate the device throughout World Showcase before the area opens to park guests. My group of nine people spent the first hour in training at “Segway Central,” and the next hour weaving in and out of the white columns in Italy, around the open buildings in Morocco, and over a narrow bridge in Japan.
The tour costs $95 per person, but be sure to ask for the AAA Member discount. For more information, ask your AAA Travel Consultant or call (407) 939-8687.
Make Your Own Mickey Mouse Ears Hat
In terms of Disney fashion and souvenirs, your basic black Mickey Mouse ears hat is so “last year.”
A new line of Mickey Mouse ears lets you customize your own mouse ears hat at the Build Your Own Ears Boutique. Choose one of 19 bases, any two snap-on ears, and then decorate your hat with patches representing your favorite Disney characters. Custom embroidery and lettering also are available.
The new Mouse ears are available in limited quantities at select locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort starting at $8.
